Re-building community health in Sudan
Re-building community health in Sudan
Building health in war
We work with communities in Sudan to build community health programs. While conflict has destroyed an already weak health system, we have been building clinics, training community health workers, and supporting delivery of basic health services. Our mission is to scale community health programs across Sudan so our people can access basic health with dignity, safety, and peace.
#حنبنيـهـو | We will build it
Nubia Health is located in Wadi Halfa, a city on the river Nile bordering Egypt. As a place of refuge for people displaced from all over Sudan we have seen the population grow quickly since the war started in 2023.
Decades of conflict, economic insecurity and poor governance have eroded Sudan’s health system.
Chronic mismanagement and low investment has led to a lopsided public health system focused primarily on hospitals in the capital, Khartoum. 70% of all healthcare providers are concentrated in the capital city of Khartoum, which serves 20% of Sudan’s population.
While war destroys Sudan’s weak health system, we believe community health worker programs are a model for providing the basics to as many people as possible for now and in the future.
Nubia Health provides maternal and child health, provide basic clinical services, and training for a cadre of community health workers (CHWs). Backed by evidence from other conflict-impacted settings, we believe CHWs can be the foundation for a reslient health system. We use proactive CHW outreach to connect the community with early access to health care, which is critical for saving the lives of women and children.
We place community healthcare workers (CHWs) at the center of our model. Trained at the Nubia Health Center, CHWs meet families where they are and bring care to patients proactively and early.
Construction of our Health Space started in February 2025 and will be a place to gather, meet, and learn.
After finding patients in need of care, health workers refer them to the Nubia Health Center. Outpatient services will provide primary health care.
The Nubia Health Fellows program will host physicians from Sudan to train them in leading community health programs. Nubia Health is also conducting clinical and public health research to understand what works and doesn’t work for improving the health of our communities.
We’re working with Muso Health, a pioneer of community health programs in Africa, to launch our CHW program. Construction has started on our primary health care centre.
We are looking to draw on expertise from Sudan, the diaspora and beyond.
