Welcome
The Nubia Health Center
Building a center for community health in Wadi Halfa, Sudan
Building a center for community health in Wadi Halfa, Sudan
Wadi Halfa sits where the Nile intersects the Egypt-Sudan border in the heart of the Nubia region.
Decades of conflict, economic insecurity and poor governance have eroded Sudan’s health system.
Chronic mismanagement and low investment has led to a lopsided public health system focused primarily on hospitals in the capital, Khartoum. 70% of all healthcare providers are concentrated in the capital city of Khartoum, which serves 20% of Sudan’s population.
As Sudan moves to a more hopeful future, we want to reverse these trends to improve health outcomes, elevate preventative health, restore dignity through community-centered care, and rebuild trust through accountability and transparency.
This Center will promote maternal and child health, provide basic clinical services, and train a cadre of community health workers (CHWs). The Nubia health care model will use proactive CHW outreach to connect the community with early access to health care, which is critical for saving the lives of women and children.
The Center will be a hub for community health innovation, research, and training serving as a beacon for marginalized communities in Sudan.
We will place community healthcare workers (CHWs) at the center of our model. Trained at the Nubia Health Center, CHWs will meet families where they are and bring care to patients proactively and early.
Our Health Space will be built around local community needs as a place to gather, meet, and partake in health education on cultivating foods at home, cooking lessons, family counseling, and social events.
After finding patients in need of care, health workers will refer them to the Nubia Health Center, where they can be observed and receive basic care for common conditions. Outpatient services will provide primary health care.
The Nubia Health Fellows program will host physicians from Sudan and South Sudan to train them in leading community health programs with support from Boston Children’s Hospital. We will also integrate world-class research from the outset to identify what strategies work and to accelerate the national effort for universal health care in Sudan.
Working with the local community and emerging health system we are completing the plan for the center and fundraising to realize this project.
